Pigskin’s BBQ–1711 Stone Bridge Dr. (BBQ) Closed Sun.  Good BBQ. Pulled pork, chicken, brisket, ribs are good (reviewers do not say much about the sides). Most people seem to like the sandwiches a lot (this is usually not the case with BBQ restaurants). Map (Dining room is open 11-11-22)

Prairie Kitchen–129 NE Richardson Loop (American) Open daily 6 am to 10 pm.  Has both healthy options and traditional Oklahoma food (such as chicken fried steak). Price Tower Plaza–510 Dewey Ave. (New American) Dinner Thu-Sun; lunch Thu & Sat.  On the 15th floor of Price Tower, the view is one of the best features. Szechuan–516 SE Washington Blvd. (Chinese) Closed Mon (and closed from 2 to 4:30 pm).  Serves American style Chinese food that people say is the best in town. Map (Dining room is open 12-12-21)

Blair

Warren Cafe–Warren Rd (approx 7 mi. east of Blair, OK) (American) Open 7 am to 2 pm (closed Sun & Mon). This appears to be a true gem that is off the beaten path. Chickasha

Crazy 8 Cafe–424 W. Chickasha Ave. (Sandwiches) Open 8:30 am to 2 pm (closed Sat & Sun).  Fresh food using home recipes. Much acclaim for their sandwiches, salads, and desserts. Menu changes frequently and has weekly and monthly specials. Map (Dining room is open 12-12-21)

Jake’s Rib–100 Ponderosa Dr. (BBQ) Open Daily.  Mixed reviews, but my readers say it is worth a stop (consensus seems to be that nothing is outstanding but everything is really good). Reviews indicate that ribs are the best item. Map (Dining room is open 12-21-22)

Mama Carol’s–624 S. 4th St. (American) Closed Sat evening & Sun evening.  American food that is more like chicken fried steak type of cuisine than the more healthy variety (but this is the number 1 restaurant on Yelp because people like it). Map (Dining room is open 3-23-24)

Chouteau

Amish Meal–15842 S. 428 (Amish) Lunch Mon-Sat; Dinner Thu-Sat.  Amish food with very high ratings is served in a farm house. The catch, though, is that they only serve meals to groups of people by reservation only. Map (Dining room is open 4-16-23)

Chicken fried steak is recommended, as the the specials (such as catfish on Fri.). Map (Dining room is open 4-16-23)

Note: Oklahoma Today also recommends Amish Cheese House at 101 S. Chouteau Ave. which serves sandwiches and also sells Amish food items such as jams and fudge. Map (Dining room is open 4-16-23)

Clayton

White Dog Hill–22901 Old US 66 Frontage Rd. (New American) Dinner only (closed Sun-Tue).  Chef is from London, and cooks mostly upscale dishes. Reviewers say they liked the food, the setting, and the experience. Located at the Custer City exit east of Clinton on I-40. Some say it is hard to find at night. Some say you need to make reservations. Map (Dining room is open 11-11-22)

Wong’s–712 Opal Ave. (Chinese) Dinner only (closed Mon). Lo mein, egg rolls are said to be good. Green beans are recommended (this is normally only found on authentic Chinese menus, and may be the same here). Has a buffet, but if you know what you want it’s best to order from the menu. Map (Dining room is open 3-23-24)

Commerce

Lil’ Cafe–209 S. Mickey Mantle Blvd. (American) Dinner only (closed Sun & Mon).  Has great reviews. Specializes in prime rib, but people also recommend the barbecued rib & chicken fried steak. Has a full menu of BBQ (brisket, ribs, etc.). Map (Dining room is open 1-11-22)

Cushing

Los Molcajetes–1108 E. Main St. (Mexican) Closed Tue.  Good reviews, mostly for the steak, fajitas, etc. Photos look like they cover enchiladas with cheese sauce instead of salsa, but I get the feeling from some of the reviews that if you want authentic food all you have to do is ask for it. Map (Dining room is open 1-15-22)

Naifeh’s Deli–600 E. Main St. (Sandwiches) Open until 8:30 pm (Closed Sun).  Sandwich shop with some Lebanese sandwiches and salads. Map (Dining room is open 1-11-22)

Davenport

Tammy’s Round Up Cafe–1025 N. Broadway (American) Closed Sun evening & closed Mon.  Good reviews for a restaurant on old US 66. Chicken fried steak seems to be the specialty, but has other items such as chicken and dumplings.  Map (Dining room is open 8-4-22)

Note: Note: Scotty B’s at 1104 N. Broadway has equally good reviews and serves CFS, but its other popular dish is the hot mess beef (hamburger with pulled pork and gravy). Also has Southwest chipotle burger.

Davis

Smokin’ Joe’s BBQ–3165 Jollyville Rd. (BBQ) Closed Wed & Sun (closes at 7 pm on weekdays).  Pulled pork is said by many to be the best item, but ribs and brisket are the best sellers here. (Also in Rush Springs). Map (Dining room is open 12-21-22)

Drumright

Joseph’s Fine Food–54580 Hwy 16 (Steakhouse) Closed Sun & Mon.  This is one of the few remaining old style Lebanese steakhouses (steaks and other entrees with Lebanese appetizers such as tabouli and hummus). Reviews are good for Joseph’s. Map (Dining room is open 1-11-22)

Duncan

Jonny’s–1215 N. US 81 (American) Closed Sat & Sun.  Known for its chicken tenders (apparently a lot of people order the burger but they think it’s “just ok”). Also has more healthy food (cranberry salad, veggie burger, etc.). Map (Dining room is open 11-21-21)

Kyoto–1209 N. US 81 (Japanese) Closed Mon.  Reviewers say the food is good (even by OKC standards). Has sushi, a few other Japanese dishes, and Chinese food. (Good reviews are mostly for the sushi). Map (Dining room is open 3-11-24)

Durant

Bamboo Noodle Bar–4216 U.S. 69 (Asian) Open daily except Sun evening.  Located in the Choctaw Casino (seems to be part of the casino’s food court). Note: it is fast food style and located in a food court 3-23-24)

Elk City

Country Dove–610 W. 3rd St. (American) Open 9 am to 5 pm (closed Sun).  Tea room type of restaurant with soup, sandwiches, quiche, etc. Reviewers really like the food, though, even though portions are described as small (this is a good place for lunch). The restaurant says they are known for the creamy potato soup. Map (Dining room is open 3-11-24)

G’s Garden–2811 W. 3rd St. (Chinese) Closed Sun & Mon. Food gets good reviews. You can order items not listed on the menu (such as pan fried noodles) that seem to be authentic. Map (Dining room is open 11-11-22)

Prairie Fire–422 S. Main St. (American) Lunch Mon-Fri; Dinner Mon-Sat (closed from 2pm to 5pm). Known for its salmon, fried green tomatoes, and prairie pasta. Upscale, but has items such as hamburgers. Map (Dining room is open 3-30-24)

Enid

Cafe Garcia–324 S. Grand Ave. (Mexican) Open daily except Sun. evening. Restaurant says it is Cal-Mex food (it looks as if most items are covered with cheese). Has some authentic Mexican dishes, though (mainly tacos). Map (Dining room is open 1-15-22)

Katy’s Pantry–2302 W. Willow Rd. (American) Open 9 am to 6 pm (closed Sun).  Is a bakery and bakes its own bread. Food is freshly made and supposedly very healthy (with the exception for the desserts, which are said to be so yummy people do not care about whether they are healthy or not). Map (Dining room is open 1-15-22)

Mango Tree Cafe–1732 S. Van Buren St. (Thai) Closed Sun.  Serves Thai food and Vietnamese pho, but owners are Cambodian and I think the best bet here would be Cambodian food (if you can get it). Has good ratings for the curry and the pho. Map (Dining room is open 1-11-22)

Octavio’s Taqueria–226 W. Broadway Ave. (Mexican) Open 11 am to 7 pm (closed 4pm Sun & closed Mon). Said to be authentic and very good food. Specializes in Mexican style tacos. So authentic that it doesn’t give chips or queso (just good food). Map (Dining room is open 1-15-22)

Eufaula

Dobber’s Roadhouse–17155 E. Hwy. 9 (American) Open Daily.  Country cooking style restaurant with very good reviews. Chicken fried steak, hamburger steak, fried chicken, pork chop, fried shrimp, hot links, ribs (I think this is just about the complete dinner menu, but also has burgers, etc.). Map (Dining room is open 1-30-23)

Goldsby

Libby’s Cafe–111 N Main Ave. (American) Closed Sun evening & Mon.  This looks like one of the best places in the state for chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, okra, and cobbler. Map (Dining room is open 4-20-23)

Gore

Soda Steve’s–445889 Hwy 10 A (American) Dinner Thu-Sun; lunch Sat & Sun. Located at Lake Tenkiller. Has hamburgers with 6 oz patties, old school sandwiches (specializing in patty melt), salads, real soft serve ice cream, and home made root beer. I think the upscale Fin & Feather restaurant that was located in the same building is no longer open (which had a buffet). Map (Temporarily closed 12-21-22)

Grove

Lazy Parrot–2530 S. Main St. (American) Closed Tue. Steakhouse, but some say steak is not the best thing to order. Fish tacos and other fried fish dishes get good reviews. Note: Google Maps has a different location and says it is now called Honey Creek BBQ (and says it serves BBQ). (Dining room is open 1-15-22)

Raggedy’s–414 E. 3rd St. (American) Lunch only (closed Sat & Sun). The only place in town with vegetarian sandwiches–one of the few places with healthy options. Reviewers say the food is genuinely good, but hours are limited and the choices don’t go much past sandwiches. Map (Dining room is open 1-15-22)

Guymon

Naifeh’s Steak House–704 NE 12th St. (Steaks) Closed Sun & Mon (and closed from 2 to 5 pm).  This is a genuine Oklahoma style Lebanese steak house, with steak entrees and Middle Eastern appetizers (can also order a shish kabob dinner). Katrina’s salad is recommended (not on menu but frequently available as a special). Map (Dining room is open 1-11-22)

Seafood and Taco Shop–119 SW 2nd St. (Mexican) Closed Wed.  The positive of this place is that it is authentic with a real Mexican taste. The negative is that there is not a great choice of menu items, but they do have tacos (shredded beef, steak, fish, etc.) and seafood (grilled fish, ceviche, etc.) as well as burritos. Asada burrito with red or green chile is recommended. Map (Dining room is open 1-22-22)

Urban Bru–118 NW 6th St. (Latin American) Open 7:30 am to 6 pm (closed Sun).  Mostly serves Mexican food but has some Filipino items (such as adobo and pork belly). Also has items from other Latin American countries (empanadas, tamales, etc.). Map (Dining room is open 1-15-22)

Heavener

La Magia del Trigo–106 W. 1st (Mexican) Closed Fri evening & Sat.  They make everything in house as you order it (even the tortillas). People like the tortas and flan. People say it is authentic, but I’m not sure if they mean south of the border style or just that it is very good Tex-Mex (I think a clue is that the taco salad is very popular–this is a Tex-Mex dish and not an authentic Mexican one). Map (Dining room is open 12-21-22)

Southern Belle–821 US 59 N. (American) Closed Sun & Mon. Southern cooking. Southern Belle chicken is the restaurant’s specialty. Located in a WW II era railroad car. Photos make the food look fresh and healthy (or at least less unhealthy since some of the food is fried). Map (Dining room is open 1-30-23)

Henryetta

Classic Diner–105 E. Main St. (American) Breakfast & lunch only (closed Sat & Sun).  Reviewers say the fact the green beans are cooked with bacon is a good sign for this place. Chicken fried steak and hamburgers are popular, but the best food seems to be at breakfast (and of course the pies and other desserts). Map (Dining room is open 12-1-21)

Rustlers BBQ–806 E. Industrial St. (BBQ) Open 11 am to 8 pm Thu-Sat and 11-6 on Sun.  This seems to be the real deal. Brisket is probably the most popular item, with ribs about equal. This is important because the popular items many times sell out early. Map (Dining room is open 5-6-22)

Hochatown

Abendigo’s–10050 N. US 259 (New American) Dinner only (closed Sun & Mon).  This is one of the few choices available for non-fried food–a lot of it is Italian style. Map (Dining room and patio are open 4-20-23)

Blue Rooster–10235 US 259 near Beaver’s Bend Entrance (Southern) Lunch Fri-Tue; dinner Fri & Sat (closed Wed & Thu).  Has southern style cooking. Owner serves New Orleans style dishes in season. Recommended dishes include buttermilk fried chicken, catfish, fried squash, sweet potato fries, fried green tomatoes, BLT. Map (Dining room and outdoor patio are open 3-11-24)

Holdenville

Lin Cuisine–423 E. Main St. (Chinese) Closed Mon.  Old school American style Chinese food that gets very good reviews (especially the egg rolls and vegetable lo mein). Map (Dining room is open 11-11-22)

Hugo

Angie’s Circus City Diner–1312 E. Jackson St. (American) Closed Sun (other days breakfast & lunch only except Fri).  Good food–chicken fried steak is specialty (also breakfast). For lunch or dinner, many people order the daily specials (catfish, ham, etc.). Steak sandwich, patty melt and beef stew are some of the customers’ favorites. Map (Dining room is open 4-16-23)

Buffalo Grill–203 W. Jackson St. (BBQ) Closed Sun.  Highly rated barbecue in an area where BBQ is the national food. Sauce is said to be excellent as well. Map (Dining room is open 1-30-23)

Kiowa

Wheeler’s Cafe–504 S. Garfield Ave. (American) Open 10 am to 10 pm Thu-Sun only. Chicken fried steak, catfish, and chicken tenders are popular. Map (Dining room is open 8-4-22)

Note: Nichol’s Cafe at 814 S. Garfield Ave. is popular for breakfast (omelet is recommended). Map

Krebs

Isle of Capri–150 SW 7th St. (Italian) Dinner only (closed Sun). Ravioli, Italian sausage, manicotti, chicken piccata, chicken parmesan are said to be good. Daughter owns Gabriella’s in OKC. This has a larger menu menu than the other restaurants. This has the lowest rating on Yelp out of the Krebs Italian restaurants (but still enough people who like it to put it on the list). Map (Temporarily closed 3-23-24)

Pete’s Place–120 SW 8th St. (Italian) Open daily 11 am to 8 pm (closes at 9 pm Fri & Sat). Chicken parmesan, spaghetti, ravioli, meatballs are good. Map (Dining room is open 9-8-22)

Roseanna’s–205 E. Washington (Italian) Closed Sun dinner & Mon. Spaghetti, tomato sauce, meatballs, chicken parmesan are said to be best here (salad is not as good here). Some say order at least one meatball with whatever dinner you choose. Map (Dining room is open 4-16-23)

Note: There are different opinions about the places.  One knowledgeable person says Roseanna’s has the best food overall, Isle of Capri has the best steaks, and the now closed Giacomo’s in McAlester had the best Italian sausage. Roseanna’s does not serve food family style (meaning all you can eat side dishes), so go to the others if you want “all you can eat.” Pete’s seems to be a good deal, and it is said to have very good marinara sauce. Different sources list different hours, but all three are in close proximity.

Lamont

Kat’s Steakhouse–107 N. Main (Steakhouse) Open 5-9 pm Thu-Sat only.  Has limited hours but it is a destination restaurant for this area of the state. The owner and her family raise their own cattle and serve Angus steak (rib eye, fillet, and sirloin are the most popular). Upscale side dishes such as asparagus, hash browns baked with butter and sour cream, and the thin onion rings that are far from ordinary. Desserts look especially good. Also known for its cocktails, including a cocktail of the week. Even though it is upscale, prices are not as high as they would be for similar restaurants in large cities (except that there is not an equivalent because these restaurants would not be raising their own cattle). Map (Dining room is open 8-4-22)

Langley

The Artichoke–35878 S. Hwy 82 (New American) Dinner only (closed Sun & Mon).  Fine dining ($$$) with recommended dishes such as steak and Santa Fe chicken. Vegetables are grown on site in their garden. Map (Dining room is open 1-11-22)

Lawton

John & Cook’s BBQ–1310 SW 21st St. (BBQ) Lunch Mon-Sat; dinner Thu-Sat (closed Sun).  Reviewers like the barbecue, sides, and pie. Platter gives you a variety of meats (and all are worth trying). Meat is cooked on hickory and pecan wood in a brick pit. Chicken is available on Fri & Sat. Map (Dining room is open 3-30-24)

Mutti’s German–1410 SW Sheridan Rd. (German) Closed Sun & Mon; closed Tue lunch.  Good schnitzel & goulasch. Has daily specials such as rouladen. Sauerkraut is said to be very good. Cakes are German style (less sweet than American). Comments say it is less expensive than the OKC German restaurants (and is a very good value). Closes at 8 pm Tue-Thu. (Note: also sells fresh eggs from the farm). Map (Dining room is open 3-11-24)

Polly’s Thai Food–402 SW Sheridan Rd. (Thai) Closes at 7pm, and closed from 2 to 4 pm (closed Sun).  Has better reviews than Thai Bistro, but I think a lot of this has to do with the service and ambiance. Said to have good Thai food. Yellow curry, green curry, red curry, beef salad, pad thai, drunken noodles are recommended. I’m not sure it is as authentic as Thai Bistro. I think I would be disappointed with the drinks (they only sell bottled drinks). Note: this was formerly also a donut shop but now only serves Thai food. Map (Dining room is open 8-9-22)

Red Pepper–1905 NW Sheridan Rd. (Cambodian) Open 11 am to 8:30 pm (closed Sun & Mon).  Has at least two dishes that are specifically Cambodian (me-ka thang and tilapia). The rest are generically described as Southeast Asian, but reviews are good and I believe it is worth a try. It is next door to the Global Food Market where you can buy drinks and bring them to the restaurant if you want. Map (Dining room is open 9-8-22)

Salas–247 E. Gore Blvd. (Mexican) Open Daily.  This has moved from its old location and is no longer exclusively Tex-Mex style, but now has an authentic menu (tacos were mentioned). At the time I ate here I thought it was better than the restaurants in OKC because this one is Dallas style Tex-Mex. Map (Dining room is open 3-11-24)

Sunrise & Shine Omelet Grill-5239 NW Cache Rd. (American) Open 6 am to 2 pm (closed Tue).  Recommended for breakfast by many reviewers. Omelets are made to order (you choose the ingredients). Pancakes and biscuits & gravy are also recommended. Cash only. Map (Dining room is open 12-12-21)

Thai Bistro–1306 NW Sheridan Rd. (Thai) Open Daily.  May be one of the more authentic Thai places in the city. Has papaya salad (it is probably northern Thai or Lao style). Map (Dining room is open 9-8-22)

Zaiqa–6512 NW Cache Rd. (Pakistani) Open 11 am to 8 pm (closed Sun).  If you have had Indian food this will be very similar, but with more emphasis on meat dishes. Some reviewers say it is not California quality, but good for this part of the country. Map (Dining room is open 3-18-24)

Mangum

Mangum Donuts & Thai Foods–720 N. Louis Tittle Ave. (Thai) Open daily 5 am to 2 pm.  Where else can you get donuts and basil with chicken, and to have both of them rated 5 stars by reviewers? They do not have curry, though–just stir fried dishes. Map (Dining room is open 3-11-24)

Marlow

Giuseppe’s–203 W. Main (Italian) Open Thu-Sat only (lunch & dinner).  Pasta, lasagna, risotto have the best reviews. Many say the recipes are authentic. Note: pizza has a 40 min. prep time (and those who order it say it is worth the wait). Map (Dining room is open 3-18-24)

McAlester

Captain John’s–1216 S. George Nigh Expwy. (Cajun) Open Daily.  Reviewers say it has unexpectedly good food, but sometimes it is crowded and has a long wait. Map (Dining room is open 1-30-23)

Hunan–618 S. George Nigh Expwy. (Chinese) Closed Sun (and closed from 2:30 to 4 pm). Mostly an unremarkable Chinese restaurant, but veggie dish with tofu is supposed to be unexpectedly good. Some say it closes early when they do not have much business, though. Map (Dining room is open 3-18-24)

Lucy’s Two–200 E. Carl Albert Pkwy. (Sandwiches) Open Mon-Fri (lunch only). Good soup and sandwiches. Potato soup is said to be especially good. Map (Dining room is open 4-16-23)

Marilyn’s–1211 S. George Nigh Expwy. (American) Open 6 am to 1:30 pm (closed Sun). Home cooking–chicken fried steak, hamburgers, chicken breast, biscuits and gravy, etc. Map (Dining room is open 1-30-23)

Medicine Park

Ann’s Country Kitchen–26020 SH 58 (American) Open daily including breakfast.  Not as old or as well known as the Old Plantation or Meers Store, but is trying to get the tourist market through its chicken fried steak, Indian tacos, cobbler, breakfast, and other items. Map (Dining room is open 5-6-22)

The Old Plantation–140 E. Lake Dr. (Steakhouse) Open 11 am to 9 pm (closed Wed).  This is a steakhouse, but many say the chicken fried steak or the steak bites are the best items. Steak seems to be good but the seasoning is what makes it less popular than the other items. Map (Dining room is open 11-11-22)

Meeker

Ladonna’s Grill–524 S. Dawson St. (American) Closed Sun evening.  Best sellers include chicken fried steak, burgers, and onion rings. One of their best features, though, is the daily specials such as Indian tacos on Thu. night and prime rib on Fri. night. Map (Dining room is open 3-18-24)

Meers

Meers Store–26005 Hwy 115 (Hamburgers) Lunch oonly (closed Mon Tue & Wed).  Hamburgers, buffalo burgers, cobbler. Serves steaks after 5 pm. Muskogee

Harmony House–208 S. 7th St. (Sandwiches) Lunch only (closed Sat & Sun).  Chicken salad, tuna wrap, and soup are recommended. Specials are said to be very good. Probably the most popular items are the desserts–cookies, key lime pie, lemon square, etc. Map (Dining room is open 1-22-22)

Mahylon’s–3301 Chandler Rd. (BBQ) Open 11am to 9pm (closed Sun & Mon). Most say it is very good barbecue, but mainly for the ribs. BBQ is cooked on hickory wood. Stuffed potato and cobbler are good. Map (Dining room is open 1-11-22)

Momma C’s Soul Food–821 W. Broadway (Soul Food) Lunch Tue-Fri; Dinner Fri.  Reviewers say food is fresh and flavorful. Map (Dining room is open 1-22-22)

My Place BBQ–4322 W. Okmulgee Ave. (BBQ) Closed Sun.  BBQ is really the big draw in Muskogee, and this has some of the best reviews. Not only that, but it is one of the longest running restaurants in the city (established in 1927). Ribs are recommended (Fri & Sat they have all you can eat ribs). Note: the other location of My Place does not have reviews as good as here. Map (Dining room is open 3-18-24)

Nowata

Nowata Depot Cafe–127 S. Oak St. (American) Closed Sun evening, Mon & Tue.  Located in an old train depot. Chicken fried steak is the most recommended dish. Come here for a leisurely meal (this is not a diner type restaurant). Map (Dining room is open 1-11-22)

Okarche

Eischen’s Bar–109 S. 2nd St. (Fried Chicken) Open 10 am to 9 pm (Closed Sun).  This is definitely some of the best fried chicken I have ever had. White bread and pickles served on the side are also good. This is a bar, and is very loud. Children are allowed with their parents. Map (Dining room is open 11-11-22)

Okemah

John’s Bar-B-Q–21 W. Coplin St. (BBQ) Open Thu-Sat 11 am to 1 pm and 4:30 to 7:30 pm.  All the meats and the sauce have excellent reviews. Being in eastern OK the pulled pork and ribs are probably a good bet, but brisket is also said to be good. Map (Dining room is open 4-20-23)

Okmulgee

House of Smoke BBQ–419 N. Wood Dr. (BBQ) Open 11 am to 2 pm and  4 to 7 pm (closed Sun).  Formerly Capps BBQ. Brisket and pulled pork are said to be good. Map (Dining room is open 9-8-22)

Pauls Valley

Bob’s Pig Shop–829 N. Ash St. (BBQ) Lunch Mon-Sat; dinner Fri.  Pig sandwich, ribs are recommended. Many say to skip the brisket. Overall it’s considered one of Oklahoma’s best BBQ places.. Map (Dining room is open 12-21-22)

Pawhuska

Pioneer Woman Mercantile–532 Kihekah Ave. (American) Open Mon-Thu 7 am to 7 pm; Fri & Sat 7 am to 8 pm (closed Sun).  Described as a Cracker Barrel with better food, the reviews indicate it is much better. Tomato soup is the owner’s favorite item. Go upstairs to buy scones, danishes, cookies, etc. Map (Dining room is open 1-11-22)

Ponca City

Enrique’s–2213 N. Waverly St. (Mexican) Closed Sun (and closed from 2 to 4:30 pm weekdays).  Popular restaurant at the airport with an “authentic menu” that looks anything but (such as tacos with cheese on top). However, the Sterns (of Roadfood fame) were impressed with the beef burrito that has a “hot pepper kick” as well as the chicken soup, chips, and sopaipillas. Map (Dining room is open 4-16-23)

Poteau

Warehouse Willy’s–300 Dewey Ave. (Steaks) Lunch Tue-Fri; dinner Tue-Sat.  People like the rib eye and the shrimp. Serves gumbo (and possibly other Cajun items) but reviews for this are not great. I would have my doubts whether it is worthwhile except for seeing it on Discover Oklahoma. Map (Dining room is open 4-16-23)

Pryor

Mid-American Grille–101 Cobblestone Dr. (American) Closed Sat lunch, closed Sun & Mon. This is Oklahoma’s version of upscale dining (meaning that most of the food is not fried). Chicken and mushroom sandwich, steak, blackened salmon. I did not see desserts mentioned as the “must try” items (probably meaning that they were very satisfied with the main dishes). Map (Dining room is open 1-22-22)

Thomas Restaurant–215 S. Mill St. (American & Mexican) Closed Tue.  This is a diner with Mexican food. What diners like are mainly two things (1) breakfast, and (2) the fact that you can mix and match American & Mexican food. Map (Dining room is open 1-11-22)

Ringling

Mud Creek Chili & BBQ–105 E. US 70 (BBQ) Open 11 am to 7 pm (closed Sun & Mon).  Brisket, ribs, buttermilk pie. Map (Dining room is open 1-30-23)

Sallisaw

Wild Horse Mtn.–US 59 south of the city (BBQ) Open 11 am to 6 pm (closed Mon).  Very well known and popular, but not given good reviews by everybody (ribs are the item that most disappoints people, but some say they are “unique” and very good). Map (Dining room is open 11-11-22)

Seminole

Catfish Roundup–11278 OK 99 (American) Closed Mon.  This restaurant is north of Seminole off of Interstate 40. Known for its catfish but has other items such as chicken (and I think ribs). Apple fritters served as an appetizer are quite popular. Map (Dining room is open 3-30-24)

Hog’s Barbecue–1715 N. Milt Phillips Ave. (BBQ) Open Wed-Sat.  Some mixed reviews but many love the ribs and the brisket. Green beans and other side dishes are said to be some of the best of any BBQ restaurant. Map (Dining room is open 5-6-22)

Seminole Maple Garden–1713 N. Milt Phillips Ave. (Chinese) Closed Sat.  Reviews indicate that this may be the best Chinese food between Shawnee and Fort Smith. Korean chicken and fried dumplings are recommended, but it is a buffet so you can try whatever you want. Map (Dining room is open 5-6-22)

Shattuck

Gusto’s–720 S. Main St. (Italian) Closed Sun.  Owners moved here from Kansas City, where they know Italian food (and this restaurant has excellent reviews). Map (Dining room is open 3-30-24)

Shawnee

Firelake Fry Bread Taco–1568 S. Gordon Cooper Dr. (Mexican) Closed Sun evening.  Located about a mile south of downtown Shawnee at the Firelake Casino. Operated by the Pottawatomie Tribe, but uses Navajo recipes for the fry bread tacos. There is a choice of sauces (from mild to spicy) and meats (beef, bison, or chicken). Map (Dining room is open 3-23-24)

Phoenix Asian Diner–419 N. Union Ave. (Chinese) Open 11 am to 9 pm (closed Sun). Reviewers compare it to Oklahoma City Chinese food–a big step up from what was in Shawnee before. Also has sushi. I think this is associated with Golden Phoenix in OKC. Map (Dining room is open 3-30-24)

Shawnee Pho–603 W. Kickapoo Spur St. (Vietnamese) Closed Sun. Good reviews and has a large menu including Bun Bo Hue. Map (Dining room is open 12-1-21)

Tandoori–12501 Valley View Rd. (Indian) Open daily. Indian restaurant in the Valero truck stop that reviewers say is excellent (some say better than in OKC). Located east of Shawnee at the Earlsboro exit (on I-40). People say it is spicy, authentic, and they give you relish. There are also some dishes they can prepare that are not on the menu. Map (Dining room is open 3-23-24)

Van’s Pig Stand–3815 N. Harrison Ave. (BBQ) Open Daily. Best BBQ I have had in the past 20 years. Note: reviews on Yelp are better for the location at 717 E. Highland St., but it is a question of consistency rather than the food being different. Map (Dining room open 11-11-22)

Stillwater

Eskimo Joe’s–501 W. Elm Ave. (American) Open Daily.  College hangout. Cheese fries are popular. Chicken and pulled pork are very good (maybe better than the hamburger), but hamburgers are the “popular” (and nostalgic for many) thing to order. Map (Dining room is open 10-24-23)

Granny’s Kitchen–701 S. Main St. (American) Open daily (breakfast and lunch only). Good home style food. Has a very large breakfast menu including breakfast burritos. For lunch pot roast and chicken fried steak are popular. Map (Dining room is open 12-21-22)

Hideaway Pizza–230 S. Knoblock St. (Pizza) Open Daily.  Hideaway is a popular chain of pizza restaurants in Oklahoma, but this is the original and has the “real deal” (the chain has changed the menu somewhat and I think has dropped some of the best pizzas). The one in Stillwater is on my wish list to try. Map (Dining room is open 3-23-24)

Ranchers Club–OSU Student Union (American) Breakfast daily; lunch Mon-Fri; dinner Tue-Sat.  Fine dining restaurant. People really like the steaks. Some say it’s very expensive, but worth the money (it does have some less expensive items if you don’t want the steak). Map (Dining room is open 10-24-23)

Thai Cafe–502 S. Husband St. (Thai) Closed Tue.  I think this is the reincarnation of Mai Thai in Oklahoma City, but for sure it has good ratings and looks good from the information I can find about it. Coconut chicken, shrimp, etc. is recommended. Curry is said by some to be too sweet (I also thought it was too sweet at Mai Thai). My favorites at Mai Thai were lemongrass tofu, pad gra prao, and tom ka gai (coconut soup). Map (Dining room is open 9-8-22)

Tokyo Pot–108 W. 10th Ave. (Japanese) Open daily (dinner only). Serves shabu shabu. I’m a little skeptical of getting shabu shabu in a college town, but it has such good reviews I believe it’s worth putting on the list. Map (Dining room is open 11-21-21)

Stilwell

Okie Joe’s BBQ–210 S. 2nd St. (BBQ) Closed Sun.  Seems to be a legit eastern Okla. barbecue joint. Brisket is the most popular but ribs and pulled pork are also recommended. Map (Dining room is open 1-11-22)

Stroud

Rock Cafe–114 W. Main St. (American) Closed Sun & Mon. American food with a few German dishes. Some say the German food is good, but not as good as in OKC. Reuben might be a good choice here, and Discover Oklahoma recommends the schnitzel. Map (Dining room is open 10-24-23)

Sulphur

Aaimpa’ Cafe–867 Cooper Memorial Dr. (Native American) Open daily (lunch only).  Indian tacos, buffalo chili. At Chickasaw Cultural Center. Map (Temporarily closed 9-8-22)

Golden Lin–907 W. 2nd St. (Chinese) Closed Tue.  Reviewers say it’s best when you order from the menu instead of eating from the buffet. This is especially important if you want food without MSG. Map (Dining room is open 4-20-22)

Springs at the Artesian–1001 W. 1st St. (American) Open daily 8 am to 9 pm (9 am to 11 pm on Fri & Sat).  Hotel restaurant that strives to present upscale and innovative food, and mostly succeeds according to reviewers. The breakfast pot pie looks interesting. Map (Dining room is open 4-20-23)

Red Moon–761 Holiday Dr. (Chinese) Closed Sun.  I am putting this on the list on the basis of on-line photos that show some of the dishes as having good vegetables including Chinese style vegetables (squash, etc.). I do not know how the sauce stacks up (which would be the other important element). The meat looks good. Map (Dining room is open 8-4-22)

Note: The Branch looks like the best restaurant in town if you want to go upscale–reservations may be required. Map

Tishomingo

Ole Red–214 W. Main St. (American) Open Daily.  Founded by Blake Shelton. Some reviewers say the food is “just OK” but the restaurant is very well known and I thought I should add it to the list. Chicken fried steak and catfish are popular. Sometimes they have live music. Map (Dining room is open 3-23-24)

Tonkawa

Quiddy’s 507 E. North Ave, (American) Open 6 am to 2 pm (closed Mon). Known for the chicken fried steak and the biscuits.  Map (Dining room is open 10-24-23)

Vinita

Clanton’s Cafe–319 E. Illinois Ave. (American) Open 7 am to 8 pm (closed Sat & Sun). Chicken fried steak is acclaimed by many as the best in the state. Fried chicken and pie are recommended. Open for breakfast, but almost all reviews are for lunch & dinner. Map (Dining room is open 9-8-22)

Canebrake–33241 E. 732nd Rd. (American) Closed Mon (dinner Tue-Sat, lunch Sat, brunch Sun).  Upscale restaurant with specials (lower priced) on weeknights. Overlooks Fort Gibson Lake. Map (Dining room is open 4-16-23)

Waynoka

Cafe Bahnhof–131 E. Cecil St. (German) Dinner only (Thu-Sat only).  Rahmschnitzel is said to be popular but I do not see it on the menu. They do have lamb chops, steak, wienerschnitzel, and cordon blue. Map (Dining room is open 1-11-22)

Weatherford

Hibachi Buffet–1231 E. Main St. (Chinese) Closed Tue.  This is a buffet that offers orders from the menu as well. I think either of these would be good. The owners used to have Young China in downtown Weatherford. Map (Dining room is open 12-21-22)

Lucille’s Roadhouse–1301 N. Airport Rd. (American) Open daily (including breakfast).  Very popular diner that is said to have a very good diner atmosphere. Breakfast (including biscuits & gravy) and chicken fried steak are popular. Map (Dining room is open 12-21-22)

Wellston

Butcher BBQ Stand–3402 W. State Hwy. 66 (BBQ) Open 11 am to 3 pm Fri-Sun only.  I have seen from more than one source that this is one of the best (if not the best) BBQ joints in the state. Has a choice of several meats–they usually sell out of all of them, so order whatever is available. Map (Dining room is open 11-11-22)

Woodward

Cafe Paradee–1018 Main St. (American) Open Mon-Fri (breakfast & lunch only). The former Cafe Eden–it has changed its name but everything else seems to be the same. Fresh and healthy food instead of the typical fried food. Has croque monsieur sandwich. Map (Dining room is open 1-11-22)

Chuan Wei–2105 Oklahoma Ave. (Chinese) Closed Sat. American style Chinese food. People say it is fresh with a good flavor. Map (Dining room is open 1-22-22)

Poly Anna Cafe–902 Main St. (American) Closed Sat evening & Sun (and closed from 3 to 5 pm).  Two dining rooms–one for traditional food, and one for contemporary (hamburger with avocado, etc.). Fried chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes are recommended. Note: after the pandemic I think maybe only the traditional side is open. Map (Dining room is open 1-22-22)

Sweet Surprises Bakery–1107 Main St. (Bakery) Open Mon-Fri 10 am to 5:30 pm (lunch is 11 to 2).  Limited menu that includes bierocks (German stuffed rolls) and daily soups (tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich are recommended). Probably the most popular item sold, though, is the sugar cookies. Map (Takeout only–bakery is open but I don’t know about the restaurant 1-11-22)

Jane & Michael Stern, “500 Things to Eat Before It’s Too Late”

This work by the Sterns, published in 2009, focuses on individual dishes and “the Very Best Places to Eat Them.” Although the list is dated by more than a decade, it is worth taking a look at the choices which include the following in Oklahoma (partial list and edited for places that have closed–Bold for No. 1 recommendation in the U.S.)::

  • Barbecue Pork Sandwich—Van’s Pig Stand Shawnee
  • Barbecue Ribs—Van’s Pig Stand Shawnee (No. 3 in the US)
  • Beef Burrito—Enrique’s Ponca City
  • Beef Jerky—Jigg’s Smoke House Clinton
  • French Fries—Murphy’s Steak House Bartlesville (No. 18 in the US)

Note About “50 States, 50 Dishes” (Condé Nast)

Condé Nast published an article on Jul. 3, 2018 using various sources to compile a “list of the dishes that capture the hearts, souls, and (oh, yes) stomachs of these 50 states (plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico), and where you should order them.” For Oklahoma it was chicken fried steak, traditionally a lesser cut of meat with a golden crispy batter and smothered in white gravy.

The magazine chose Ann’s Chicken Fry House on Route 66 in Oklahoma City, but this has since closed. Sources say a good alternative is Clanton’s in Vinita (also on Route 66), and possibly it is even better than Ann’s was.

Closed (Formerly on the Restaurant Guide)

  • Trail’s End BBQ–402 W. Robert S. Kerr, Wynnewood (reported closed 2021) Noted for ribs, brisket, and Santa Fe chicken sandwich. Tamales were also popular.
  • Wagon Wheel–107 E. 5th St., Wapanucka (closed 2022) American food (chicken fried steak, BBQ ribs, etc.) with excellent reviews. Because it was located near an Amish community (Clarita) it sounded like it might include Amish food (the restaurant was described as being very clean with high quality food).
  • Whistle Stop–2700 N. Main St., McAlester (closed 2022) Sandwiches and healthy eating (not fried food)

  1. surprised you don’t have Studio Wok in Shawnee listed.
    https://www.studiowokok.com/
Outstanding meals everytime we go to Shawnee (family events).
They even still practice putting a decorative touch with carved vegetables and fruit
Some of the best Chinese we’ve had in OK, right up there with Fung’s or Chow’s in OKC or Golden Gate in Tulsa.

  2. While known as prime cattle country, Oklahoma may surprise you when it comes to meat-free fare. The state’s growing repertoire of plant-based eateries offers a kaleidoscopic array of flavors and cuisines.
